Louisiana was named by the French explorer Sieur de La Salle in 1682 to honor King Louis XIV of France.

The Pelican is the state bird of Louisiana. The pelican, rather than let its young starve, would tear at its own flesh to feed them. William C.C. Claiborne, Louisiana's first territorial Governor, had such respect for the Pelican that it led him to first use the Pelican symbol on official documents.
